Pygmalion

Pygmalion
Description

A fiercely witty reworking of the classical myth of a sculptor who falls in love with his creation, this contemporary take on Shaw’s 1912 play, which inspired the romantic musical My Fair Lady, resonates boldly- and differently- for today’s audiences. This version, seen through the lens of the immigrant experience, with an eye toward the complexities of assimilation, illustrates the hypocrisies of upper class morality and the near impossibility of overcoming prejudice in a controlled social hierarchy.

What will happen when linguist Henry Higgins attempts to transform refugee Eliza Doolittle into a professional woman, comfortable in upper class society?  And what’s the danger in overlooking that she just may have a mind of her own?
