Calderon’s play, dating from 1636, focuses on two stories: that of the imprisoned prince Segismundo at the mercy of his father Basilio and that of the young Rosaura on a quest to take revenge on the man who dishonored her. The play’s real achievement rests in its study of fate, and what role everyone plays in his own destiny.
